If you’ve been on Instagram at all in the last year I’m sure you’ve seen essential oils at some point. If you’re like me, you’ve seen them but never paid much attention. Before trying essential oils for myself I was a total skeptic. Sure, I saw different posts raving about the benefits but I thought there’s no way that it actually works. After seeing some fellow IGers, who I know and trust, post about essential oils I started getting curious. Then, when my friend Megan reached out to me about trying out Young Living, I finally gave in. She gave me so much information about essential oils and how they personally helped her and her family in amazing ways so I decided to give it a shot. Fast forward to now, and I’m totally hooked! Essential oils are a big part of my daily routine now so I’ve rounded up my top 5 ways to use essential oils everyday.
I pretty much diffuse oils all day long in my home. There are plenty of blends to support immunity, allergy relief, boost your mood, get rid of smells, help you focus, help you relax and more. One of my favorite blends in the morning is peppermint + lemon. As the craziness of the day goes on I usually switch to lemon + stress away (can you tell I love lemon?).
Other than diffusing oils, you can add a drop of lavender to mascara to boost lash growth, add frankincense to nighly moisturizer to help promote anti-aging and add a drop of digize in a glass of water if you’re feeling bloated. I could go on and on about different ways to use oils to promote health and wellness but these are just a few of my favorites!
To be totally honest, the success stories about essential oils and children is what sold me on trying them out. And much to my surprise, they’re as amazing as they seem! Just like with adults, there are countless ways to use oils with kiddos but it’s important to be educated and learn how to dilute your oils properly before using them on your little ones.
I add lavender + peace and calming diluted with coconut oil to a roller and use it on Mason’s feet every night. You would be amazed at how quick it calms him down and helps him sleep! I also use stress away + orange to combat crankiness and the terrible twos. I’ve also heard amazing things about copaiba for teething but luckily Mason was done teething before I got into essential oils.
I always waited until Mason was asleep to clean my house because I was terrified of him getting into cleaners. Even though I used natural cleaners I was still afraid of him being around them while I was cleaning (maybe I was just procrastinating but whatever 😉 ). Now, I pretty much use essential oils for ALL of my cleaning and I don’t really have to worry. For a really great all purpose cleaner, try adding 1 part vinegar, 1 part water and 10 drops of thieves oil to a glass bottle. It really works wonders!
One of my absolute favorite tricks is adding purification to a cotton ball and taping it inside your garbage can and/or diaper genie. You guys… this is a total game changer. There’s nothing worse than opening your garbage can and getting hit with a rotten smell so this totally saves me. You can use the cotton ball trick (with lemon oil) in your fridge, too!
I use purification for my laundry, too by adding a few drops to a damp washcloth and throwing it in the dryer with my clothes. Also, after cooking dinner I diffuse purification to eliminate any greasy smells.
If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know I love my me time. I’m a huge advocate of self-love and promoting relaxation but adding in essential oils take relaxing to a whole new level. Try adding 3 drops of lavender + 3 drops of peace and calming to epsom salts (1/2 cup per 50 lbs body weight) to your bath. I love to throw on a face mask and soak in the bath before bed time. I swear I sleep so much better when I do this! There are also many different bath combinations for immune support, sore muscles, etc…
I’ve been drinking a glass of water with lemon + peppermint first thing in the morning to help my body detox and get energized for the day. The possibilities are endless when it comes to adding oils in the kitchen. Try adding peppermint to your coffee or hot cocoa, lemon or orange to your cookie batter, lemon and rosemary to chicken, or lime to guacamole! I’m not a big tea drinker but for those of you that are, add 1 drop thieves + 2 drops of lemon + 1 tsp honey to warm water to support your immune system.
I seriously can’t believe how many ways there are to use essential oils! Like I said, my friend Megan got me hooked with Young Living. I know there are a few different essential oil companies out there but I went with Young Living because they actually own their own farms and oversee the process from start to finish. Absolutely no one else can get in and tamper with any part of the process or add any synthetic ingredients. Young Living oils are safe to inhale, ingest and apply topically whereas not all oils on the market are safe to do so. Many of the oils you see in the store or online actually have toxic chemicals (even anti-freeze..yuck!) and are not safe for internal use. Young Living is also the only oil company that is FDA compliant so you know their oils are safe to ingest!
To get introduced to oils I went with the start kit which includes 11 of the most popular oils, a free diffuser, samples, empty travel bottles and a book from Young Living. You can sign up and shop through Megan here (sign up as a member to receive a 24% discount…this does NOT mean you have to sell the product or pay a monthly fee) but I highly recommend sending her an email or connecting on Instagram because she pretty much knows everything haha! But seriously, she has been such a huge help and offered me so many amazing resources to get started without feeling overwhelmed. It’s important to go through someone who knows the product and can educate you rather than blindly signing up so that you have the best experience possible! Check out Megan’s Instagram (and her beautiful baby girl!) HERE or send an email to email@example.com for more information!
