7 Tips Every Stay at Home Mom Needs to Know

7 Tips Every Stay at Home Mom Needs to Know

Before becoming a stay at home mom I could only dream about what it would be like.  My home would be sparkling, I would have clean hair everyday, I would nap when the baby napped and all would be right in the world.  Well I was wrong.  So wrong.  Now, when people make those assumptions it’s hard not to get offended because it is not that simple.  I have to reel myself back in and try to remember my thought process before I ever stayed home. I truly believe that it is one of those things that you cannot fully understand/respect until you do it for yourself.    Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE being a stay at home mom but it is freaking hard.  It is a real job and it never stops. Whether you’re on the fence about becoming a stay at home mom or you’ve done it for years, here are 7 tips every stay at home mom needs to know. 7 Tips Every Stay at Home Mom Needs to Know

Get dressed.  Even if you change out of your sweats into a different pair of sweats, just do it.  You don’t have to wash your hair or put on makeup every single day (bonus points if you do) but change out of those pajamas.  A fresh pair of clothes will make you fee like you can conquer the world… or at least your children.

Make a cleaning schedule and stick to it!  I divided up the rooms of my house so that I can focus on one room each day.  I still tidy up and do the dishes daily but breaking it up room by room will save you so much time (and sanity!) in the long run. Feel free to download my daily checklist here.

Plan your meals ahead of time.  Sit down over the weekend and plan your meals for the week ahead.  I usually plan breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks then write my grocery lists accordingly.  This will make you feel a thousand times more organized and in control of your day.

Get out of the house. I don’t care where you go but just get out!  It’s hard to be happy when you’ve been cooped up in a stuffy house all day.  Mason and I are both in much better moods when we get a change of scenery.  We try to get out everyday whether it’s playing at the park, going to the pool, going for a walk or just grocery shopping. You don’t realize how much you need fresh air until you’re at home all day everyday with a wild toddler.

Talk to other stay at home moms. Staying home all day with no adult interaction gets lonely!  Whether it’s a coffee date, a phone call or connecting in a Facebook group, you need this sisterhood.   Things are going to happen that you need to talk about and your friends that aren’t stay at home moms just won’t understand.  No disrespect but it’s just that your childless friends don’t relate to certain stories and struggles the same way your mama friends do. PS- it can be really hard to make friends as a stay at home mom. If you’re struggling with this or interested in any of the Facebook groups I’m in please send me an email!

Make time for yourself. I’m not saying you need to go to the spa every week, although if you can do that more power to you (and please tell me your secrets!)  What I mean by this is take 10 minutes out of your day, kid-free, and relax.  If you work from home, your work does NOT count here!  My “me time” is after Mason falls asleep… I wash my face and take my time getting ready for bed.  Never in a million years would I have thought that my skincare routine would be a highlight of my day but it is.  It’s my uninterrupted relax time and I will never take it for granted!

You will have bad days. Just accept it.  Like any job, not everyday will be sunshine and daisies.  You’re going to have days where you doubt yourself and question if this was the right move for your family.  This does not make you a bad mom.  Kids are going to test you and not everything will go as planned but that’s life.  Don’t sweat it if you didn’t get to your daily cleaning or you didn’t feel like making dinner so you ordered a pizza instead.  We all have those days and guess what? Tomorrow is another day.

A cleaning schedule is so helpful! It keeps you on track and you know exactly what you need to do.

It definitely does! Before I made a schedule I would find myself either not doing anything or trying to do the whole house in one day… neither of those worked out very well ha!

Speaking of pj, I’m in it all day long. It’s comfy but it does make you feel a little laid back (lazy) sometimes. 🙂

Definitely! Most days I find myself changing out of the ones I wore to bed into a fresh pair so I can still be comfy 🙂

These are so true! New to the SAHM game as of about 4 months ago… something I do if I really don’t want to change out of yoga pants but still want to feel like I’m getting dressed is put on a cute apron! Sounds kind of 1940’s, but there are really pretty ones around and it makes me feel more ready to clean up.
