When you think of kid-proofing your home you think of cabinets, outlets, doorknobs and baby gates, right? I went crazy with kid-proofing the house as soon as Mason became mobile. I thought I had all my bases covered until he discovered my iPhone. Please tell me I’m not the only one whose child is OBSESSED with technology… phones, tablets, computers, anything with a screen is like a magnet to him! So I’m adding kid-proofing your phone onto the long list of things that need attention before baby becomes mobile.
Here are three simple tricks to kid-proofing your iPhone!
1. Protect– chances are 99% of the time your kid’s hands are sticky and slobbery and they drop the majority of things they get their hands on. The thought of Mason breaking my phone (or anything relatively valuable) gives me serious anxiety! Put your mind at ease by protecting it. Adding a case is the most obvious way to protect it but I’m kind of a crazy person and I don’t like the extra bulk that a case adds. If you’re like me and like to live life on the edge 😉 you need to add a screen protector!
More often than not it’s the screen that cracks on the iPhone so I always make sure to have a heavy duty screen protector on my phone. I want to have something that is strong enough to protect my phone from scratches and falls but thin and clear enough so that you can’t really tell there’s anything on it. The intelliGLASS HD smarter screen protector from intelliARMOR is amazing for this! It’s made from real glass so it;s appearance won’t differ from your actual screen and it’s perfectly clear, too. It also has an oleophobic coating on top…ummm what?! An oleophobic coating is a specially formulated coating that is smudge and fingerprint resistant. It literally means oil repellent so it keeps your oily fingers from marking up your phone. This is probably my favorite feature because a toddler leaves some SERIOUS fingerprints on everything they touch haha.
Love screen protectors but HATE installing them? Yep me too. I’ve literally ruined screen protectors just trying to get them on my phone before… I’m SO bad at it!! I was extremely pleased (and relieved) to find out that the intelliGLASS protector has advanced silicone adhesion so you can get it on perfect the first time. Even I could do it! It’s pretty much dummy-proof so you don’t have to worry about putting it on, noticing bubbles, taking it off and repeating that dreaded task 🙂
You guys know I’m all about the deals so I have to share this one with you! intelliARMOR makes protectors for almost all of the smartphones, tablets and devices on the market but I currently have the iPhone 6S so I have the screen protector that fits my device. The HD smarter screen protectors are originally $39.95 but they are marked down to $10.95 right now. Plus, you can use code INTELLI20 to get an extra 20% off your purchase. Sooooo you just got a $40 screen protector for under $9. Boom.
2. Enable Guided Access- Guided access takes about 10 seconds to turn on on your iPhone and once enabled it keeps the iPhone in a single app. This is AMAZING for younger kids who have no idea what they’re clicking once their outside of their app. I always turn on guided access when I give Mason my phone so that I know he isn’t purchasing 15 useless apps and calling random numbers. It’s super easy to enable also:
Go to settings and click general
Click on accessibility
Scroll down and click on guided access
Turn it on! You can add a passcode, set a time limit and turn the shortcut on and off from this screen too.
3. Enable Restrictions- Restrictions are awesome if you have a lot of apps on your phone or iPad for your kiddo. We have a tablet that has Mason’s apps so he doesn’t have too much on my iPhone. When he is using my iPhone I usually stick with guided access for him. Restrictions allow you to hand pick which apps you want your kid to have access to. It also lets your customize your settings while in restricted mode. I LOVE this because you can turn off settings like location sharing while your child is using your device.
Go to settings and click general
Scroll down and click on restrictions
Here you can change the apps accessible in restricted mode and change your settings
You can also choose a passcode to get in and out of restricted mode so your little ones can’t get out and start going click-happy on your iPhone
We all vow to not let our kids get much screen time but let’s be real… we all let it happen! It’s 2016 and technology is EVERYWHERE. It’s not easy to escape sometimes! Plus, when it can prevent a public meltdown I almost always give in haha. Is your kiddo as obsessed with technology as mine is?! If so, what other tips do you have for kid-proofing your iPhone? I’d love to hear!
